August 2011 MR. BRIAN HERBERT
Pursuant to the Disciplinary Code of the British Ju-Jitsu Governing Body (“BJJAGB”), Mr Brian Herbert was suspended from membership on 23 May 2011 for a period of 18 months. He has since resigned from the BJJAGB.
Mr Herbert has now informed the BJJAGB that he has offered all of his members the choice whether to remain with the BJJAGB or to leave. He has further advised the BJJAGB that all of his members have decided to resign from the BJJAGB and that he has alternative insurance cover in place.
We are deeply concerned about this because we have been contacted by a number of our members, who are registered with Mr Herbert’s clubs, informing us that they wish to remain with the BJJAGB because the BJJAGB is the only official Governing Body for ju-jitsu in the UK. Individual memberships of the BJJAGB are personal to the individual members themselves and nobody other than the individual members can therefore resign their memberships on their behalf.
Following Mr Herbert’s resignation from the BJJAGB, it has been brought to our attention that his organisation now claims to be a member of the United Kingdom Martial Arts Governing Body which he claims is “the official governing body for ju-jitsu in the United Kingdom”. Not only is this statement completely false, but no-one at the BJJAGB has even heard of it although we understand that Mr Herbert is looking to set up an organisation under that name. Please be assured that there is, and can only be, one official Governing Body for ju-jitsu in the UK recognised by Sport England/Sport UK, and that is the BJJAGB.
The benefits of membership with the BJJAGB are numerous and include the official registration of grades, official courses, coaching awards, insurance, participation in official British ju-jitsu championships, and lots more.
Individual membership of the BJJAGB is open to all ju-jitsuka through a BJJAGB registered club.
