Eric has been involved in self defence, physical intervention and martial arts training for over 40 years during which time he has studied and written about a large number of different systems.
Eric has also appeared on television and radio to discuss various aspects of self defence, physical interventions and martial arts in which he is highly qualified and respected.
Within martial arts, Eric holds black belts which were first awarded to him by the British Judo Association in 1974. Since then, he has received numerous other qualifications including 7th Dan B.J.J.A.GB and being appointed an Examiner of the British Judo Association in 1980 and a Senior Referee in 1985.
Eric is the author of Defend Yourself: The Complete Guide to Personal Safety, Self Defence and Security at Home, published by Pelham, London in 1993. Defend Yourself is the official textbook of the British Self Defence Governing Body of which he is Chairman and Director of Training and Examiners.
He is also co-author of Coercive Measures in the Management of Imminent Violence: Restraint, Seclusion and Enhanced Observation; in Violence in Mental Health Settings, published by Springer, New York in 2006.
Eric also acts as honorary lawyer to the BSDGB and the BJJAGB. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has a First Class Honours Law Degree and is also a senior lecturer in law at Liverpool John Moores University.
Eric also has considerable experience as a registered Expert Witness, having been instructed in hundreds of cases in the UK and in other jurisdictions in cases involving martial arts, physical interventions and self defence. He has published many articles on the law and practise relating to self defence, physical interventions and restraints.
Eric advises numerous bodies on the use of force and physical restraints and has advised in a large number of cases the Prison Officers’ Association and the Home Office on the use of force, control & restraint and defensive tactics used by prison officers in Her Majesty’s prisons.
