Terry’s first dealings in the fighting arts was in boxing. Firstly promoting Briggs Motor Bodies (now Fords) then in the regular army (R.E.M.E).
Whilst serving in Korea he turned his hand to the oriental martial arts. He found Ju-Jitsu as his major love whilst awaiting shipment home from Japan, this was back in the 1950’s.
On arrival back in the U.K. Terry found it difficult to find an instructor in Ju-Jitsu so as a stop gap he trained at Judo gaining 1st Dan. At this time Terry found Vernon Bell who became his first English Sensei and although Terry trained with other teachers Vernon Bell remained his favourite, though unfortunately he is now deceased.
Terry opened his first club in Basildon, Essex with Mr Bell’s association, teaching both Ju-Jitsu and Judo, going on to eventually form with his wife Janet the Jikishin Ju-Jitsu Association, which became one of the country’s largest groups, located mainly in the South East.
With Janet they took his style of Ju-Jitsu to many countries around the globe and Jikishin Ju-Jitsu International came in to being. As a founder member of the UNJJ he regularly teaches around Europe. He is also one of the persons responsible for the competitive side of the international competitions.
Though now in his seventy’s Terry is still very active in teaching on the mat worldwide.
